Why I Am Pro-Life: Koria

Author at the Utah March for Life

My name is Koria. I am a wife, mother, writer and proud to March for Life.

I haven’t always considered myself “pro-life” the way that I am now. Until several years ago, I was only slightly aware of the issue. Growing up, I first learned about abortion from Hollywood, with films like Dirty Dancing giving me a vague idea of what it was. I never thought much about my stance on the topic because abortion never resonated as being relevant to me personally. Abortion affected other people, it was something far away from my life. Because of this, I never questioned the legality of it. That changed while I was pregnant with my first child in 2013.

When I discovered the truth

The further I progressed in my first pregnancy, the more I started researching fetal development and birth. I loved reading about what was happening inside me as my baby grew.

While reading about pregnancy online, I came across images of aborted fetal remains. Tiny, bloody hands and feet. The images were hard to shake from my mind. I hadn’t ever seen anything like it, nor had I considered what abortion actually looked like. In passing, I mentioned the images with someone that I am close with, wanting to get their opinion on what I had seen.

They immediately dismissed what the images were and cautioned me to “just not look at things like that.” My friend did not try to say the images were fake, but warned me to just ignore them instead of dwelling on the disturbing truths that they revealed. That is when I realized that abortion is very real and, in reality, far worse than most know or care to admit. That is when I knew that most just pretend it doesn’t happen, as I had been doing for years. But after that realization, I couldn't ignore the issue anymore. I wanted to know more and, most importantly, I wanted to know the truth. Even if I was not participating in it, how could I just sit quietly while knowing the horrors of this procedure?

How I went from gray area to ardently anti-abortion

I just had my fourth child. Since that initial insight into abortion, I’ve done mountains of research. I’ve learned about abortion itself, the industry, the politics involved, and the people affected on all sides of the issue. In the beginning of my research, I still sat on the fence. I believed abortion should be legal for certain circumstances. I also thought if an abortion was performed early enough in pregnancy, it may not be wrong. But it wasn't long before those opinions changed, too.

The more I learned, the more I realized that I could not justify abortion in any circumstance. My stance against abortion solidified when I found Live Action, which is one of the leading national pro-life groups. Live Action produces content that shows the truth about the brutal procedure that is abortion and exposes unethical (and sometimes, dangerous) practices within the abortion industry. They are also hard at work training people like myself to become strong pro-life advocates. Their content convinced me that abortion, no matter the reason behind it, only harms all involved. [1]

Pro-life groups, Pregnancy Resource Centers, and those serving women with unexpected pregnancies are amazing. Having been involved with these groups, I can say that I've seen nothing but love and selfless service. Abortion is not a solution to our problems. We can and should love both mother and child.

The other side

In all of my research, I’ve made sure to look at the other side, too. I have yet to find compelling arguments on the pro-abortion side, and abortion does not provide the love and compassion that overflow from pro-life advocates. Though the abortion industry and many pro-abortion individuals often spread myths about pro-life advocates, I have been able to see firsthand the love and humanity at the heart of the pro-life cause. Pro-lifers have science, morals, truth, logic, and love on our side. It is the side of history that I, and you, have to be on.

Why I March

Politics and sensitive issues were something I shied away from on my social media. I stuck to pictures of my family and happier things. But in 2019, I finally decided to post my thoughts about the evils of abortion on my personal social media account. I knew it would cause some discomfort for people that I cared about, but I wanted to make my convictions and the truth known among those that I have connections with. So many people bravely express their opinions about topics near to their hearts...why shouldn’t I? Afterwards, it surprised me to hear back from many friends saying how they felt the same but had never shared their thoughts publicly.

This encouraged me to do more to show where I stand. I decided that I needed to go to a March for Life. I’d never been to any kind of political demonstration. Even though I feel strongly on a number of important issues, abortion is the issue that drove me to be active and vocal. It is literally an issue of life or death. I am proud to March and be a voice for the voiceless.

I wanted so badly to fly to the National March for Life in Washington, D.C., but it unfortunately didn’t work out. Luckily, most states have their own Marches and I got the opportunity to March with my husband at the Utah State Capitol for the first time in 2020. Pro-lifers have and give plenty of love, but we need more noise. People need to see others standing up against abortion in order to have the courage to do so themselves.

Attending the March has spurred my interest in pro-life activism and I’ve found many ways to defend the preborn, which have given me the opportunity to meet incredible people to join with in this fight. I’ve always loved to write, and for the last few years I’ve become an aspiring author working on fiction novels. Now, I also get to write articles articulating the truth I've learned about life and the importance of defending it. My activism has given me the courage to have clear pro-life messages in my novels, which I hope to self-publish.

It isn’t always popular to be against abortion, but most human rights issues in history were not seen as popular. Marching peacefully is part of American history, we can change unjust laws and influence the masses by Marching.

Everyone who has any interest in pro-life work should March and get involved! Come learn about what pro-life work really looks like and spread the word on social media, or even volunteer. From sidewalk advocacy to sharing pro-life content, including our own. [2] We need your voice. We need more feet on the ground marching with us. Even through the smallest efforts, you can change hearts and minds. I know that because my mind and heart were changed, and that is Why I March and get involved.

Three ways YOU can get involved

According to Let Them Live, 73% of women get abortions because of financial burdens. Any amount contributed makes a difference! Consider donating to organizations like Pro-Life Utah so we can alleviate the financial burdens of mothers and provide needed pregnancy and childcare supplies.

Volunteer with us! Pro-Life Utah is always looking for more people who can join our team and assist us in our fight to end abortion and serve mothers and their children. We would love to have you join us in our efforts.

Follow us on social media and share our content! We share informative and inspirational content on our social media pages, and we need your help in getting this information to women who may be in need of our services and support. One share could save a life and change others.

We at Pro-Life Utah are passionate about ending abortion, and we want to help you get involved. For too long, society has convinced women that we need abortion to achieve equality and succeed in life. But we don’t. Women deserve better than abortion, and we need your help in creating a life-affirming culture in America and in Utah through legislation, outreach efforts, and support. Please contact us if you are interested in activism. We need everyone we can get in this fight.

Pro-Life Utah is active in influencing pro-life legislation in the state of Utah, as well as offering numerous financial and practical resources to women with unexpected pregnancies. If you are struggling with an unexpected pregnancy, we are here for you. Visit pregnancychoiceutah.org to see the resources that we offer. If you are able, please consider donating so we can continue in our legislative work and support for women.
