When Emily started experiencing symptoms of morning sickness that made it difficult to work, she worried she might be facing an unexpected pregnancy. She was just recovering from a recent mental breakdown, and felt scared, alone and unprepared.
But this was not the first time. In a previous relationship that had turned toxic, Emily had found herself facing an unplanned pregnancy and decided to have an abortion. That decision ultimately led to the ending of the relationship, and her abortion continued to trouble her when she reflected upon it.
Emily decided to make an appointment and find out if she was actually pregnant. She initially went to Planned Parenthood, but was turned away. As she left Planned Parenthood, Emily noticed some sidewalk advocates from Pro-Life Utah standing outside the clinic, and they struck up a conversation. She spoke with sidewalk advocate Lindsey Tafengatoto, who told her that there was a nearby clinic called the Pregnancy Resource Center, which offered free ultrasounds and other services for expectant mothers. She was able to schedule an appointment and confirm the pregnancy. Unlike Planned Parenthood, the pro-life approach at the Pregnancy Resource Center meant that she could listen to her baby’s heartbeat, and see them moving on the monitor.
Having gone through the pain of an abortion before, Emily knew she could not do it again. Despite all of the challenges ahead of her, Emily felt that the fact that she was pregnant again was a sign that she was supposed to be a mother, and she was going to keep her baby. The powerful experience of seeing and hearing her baby at the Pregnancy Resource Center helped solidify Emily’s decision. Her family and friends also gave her tremendous support and encouragement. Her father was so happy when he heard the news that he immediately started helping her pick out baby names.
Lindsey from Pro-Life Utah was a constant source of support and encouragement. She helped Emily find a doctor, took her to doctor’s appointments, and helped her apply for government assistance.
Emily feels that if she had known about Pro-Life Utah and all of the resources available to women with unexpected pregnancies, she would have chosen life for her first baby. But she is grateful she found them for her second pregnancy, and she considers every day with her daughter a blessing. Being a young single mother, Emily faces many challenges each day, but has never regretted choosing life for her daughter and says that she could not imagine a life without her now. Emily credits her daughter for giving her the motivation to keep going every day, and despite the challenges she faces, she has managed to start her own online store selling handmade bracelets.
