Misconception Monday: Abortion Is Between a Woman and Her Doctor

Misconception: Abortion is a private decision between a woman and her physician.

Pro-choice advocates and the media have done a masterful job over the last several decades in creating the illusion that abortion is a deeply private and personal matter that should only be between a woman and her physician. This has been accomplished by the slow and steady drum of misinformation about the nature and reality of a pregnancy and by downplaying the reality of abortion procedures.

Instead of a vibrant, growing human life with its own unique DNA, fingers, toes, brain activity, and heartbeat, an unborn baby is often reduced to a “pregnancy,” a “clump of cells,” or the slightly more generous “fetus.” The goal, of course, is to liken a pregnancy to an unwanted medical condition, such as cancer or a cavity. If a woman has a cavity, surely nobody other than herself and her dentist has the right to tell her how to treat that cavity. It is after all, her cavity, in her body.

But this misconception ignores the reality that abortion deeply affects many others besides the woman and her doctor. Every child obviously has not only a mother but also a father. Just because the child is growing inside its mother’s body does not make it belong to the father any less, but our current legal system offers no protections for fathers who do not wish to see their child killed. There are many heart-wrenching stories of a father begging helplessly for his child’s life as he watches the mother walk into an abortion clinic. Fathers, grandparents, and extended families can struggle with anxiety, anger, depression, and a host of other debilitating struggles for the rest of their lives after their child is aborted.

Of course, the most obvious person who is directly affected by abortion other than the mother and her doctor is the child itself. The baby loses its life, but that’s not all. Depending on the stage of pregnancy, standard abortion procedures may include such barbaric practices as injecting a poison filled needle directly into the child’s skull, sucking it into various pieces through a vacuum tube, tearing off limbs with forceps, and crushing its skull.

Regardless of one’s personal beliefs about the legality or morality of abortion, there is no denying that abortion deeply affects many others besides just the mother and her physician.
