Misconception: A woman should not be forced to have a baby

Abortion is often justified with the argument that a woman should not be forced to have a baby against her will.

The recent popular Hollywood series, A Handmaid’s Tale, which depicts a dystopian future in which women are forced into pregnancies and child-rearing against their will, is often referred to in this argument; pro-choice advocates dress up and demonstrate in costumes from this show, implying that, without abortion, this is the grim reality women would face.

Of course, this notion is patently absurd.

Nobody would argue that a woman should be forced into pregnancy against her will. However, once the woman is pregnant, it is no longer a question of whether she will have the baby. She already has it living and growing inside of her.

Whether the pregnancy is at one week or 30 weeks, the fact is that there is a human life growing inside of her. The question then is not whether she will have a baby but whether she should be allowed to kill the baby she already has.

Women certainly have every right to determine if they will be sexually active, and whether they will choose contraception. None of these choices should ever be forced on a woman. But once she becomes pregnant, the only thing that should be forced is that the baby not be killed. If a mother has an unwanted pregnancy, there are many wonderful options for adoption.
