In what’s being called the “Protect Life Rule,” the Trump administration has announced that Title X Family Planning funds will only go to health facilities that do not perform abortions nor refer for abortions. Organizations like Planned Parenthood must have their family planning services physically and fiscally separate from their abortion services in order to qualify for the funds.
Currently in Utah, one Planned Parenthood clinic performs abortions, while seven clinics offer the state mandated informed consent class 72 hours prior to an abortion. Because these are referral centers, we are hopeful that PPAU will not be eligible to receive Title X funding under the new rule.
Pro-Life Utah is thrilled with this announcement. Utah is overwhelming pro-life, and it’s unacceptable that taxpayer money is going to an organization that provides abortions, no matter how the funds are specifically earmarked. With this change, as well as the grant application criteria changes from February, we’re confident that more women will be served with a broader range of family planning services than ever before.
