Untruths From Utah Planned Parenthood CEO: "Comprehensive" Care?

Karrie Galloway, the CEO of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah, has said in multiple media interviews that her organization provides “comprehensive reproductive health care." Here are a few examples:

  • In February 2016, Galloway said, "Planned Parenthood has been part of the Cache Valley community for decades, providing comprehensive and compassionate reproductive health care to Cache Valley women and their families."
  • In September 2015, Galloway told City Weekly, "We offer comprehensive reproductive health care to the people of Utah in a compassionate and nonjudgmental way."
  • Writing for the Salt Lake Tribune in February earlier this year, Galloway said, "We take this work seriously....because we believe that every woman deserves to have access to comprehensive reproductive health care."
  • Responding to a 40 Days For Life Campaign in September 2016, Galloway said her organization was, "working every day to help women practice healthy family planning and to provide comprehensive reproductive health care."

Galloway and others in leadership continue to repeat this idea, and even the Planned Parenthood-ran website proutah.org has this phrase on their homepage:

But is there really truth to this claim? “Comprehensive” means complete, full, and holistic, right? And by any reasonable definition, reproductive health care would mean any medical care relating to the reproductive system (primarily for women but also for men).

Planned Parenthood of Utah does NOT provide:

  • Miscarriage management

  • Molar pregnancy care

  • Natural Family Planning Instruction

  • Prenatal care

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) care

  • Infertility testing & treatment

  • Hysterectomies

  • Tubal Ligations

  • Ectopic Pregnancy Management

  • Endometriosis Care

  • Uterine fibroid treatment

  • Labor & Delivery/ Birth Care

Planned Parenthood of Utah’s annual reports (linked to at the bottom of this article) have no mention of these services, and a simple phone call to any of their eight clinics reveals that they do not offer them. In fact, in an interview with Ted Capener, Galloway herself says that they don't provide prenatal care.

Here’s what they do provide:

  • Birth control (the pill, IUD, Depo shot, the implant, condoms, the morning-after pill)

  • STD testing

  • Pregnancy tests

  • Pap smears

  • Abortion

  • Vasectomies

Despite their frequent claims that they are essential for women’s healthcare, in reality they are far from a full-service gynecological organization. “Comprehensive reproductive health care” is a deceptive talking point.

This is not merely a game of semantics; make no mistake, this is the CEO deliberately misrepresenting what her organization does to make Planned Parenthood of Utah seem more necessary and more palatable. It's time to call them out.
